Mzoli’s is a popular place where customers get to experience braai parties. They are famous for their braais of chicken, steaks, lamb and boerewors (sausages made of spiced minced beef, lamb or pork).

DISH – Bobotie

WHAT IS IT?

Bobotie is a minced meat pie topped with an egg custard. It starts with trimming the crust from slices of bread. The bread slices are then soaked in in whole milk and drained of the excess. The mashed bread is set aside and the onions are sautéed. Signature Cape Malay spices of bay leaves, garlic, garam masala, ground cloves, cumin, turmeric and curry powder are added. Tamarind and brown sugar join the mix. The milk-laden bread is mixed in, followed by the ground beef. The bobotie is then spooned into a baking dish and crowned with a mixture of beaten eggs and milk. It is then cooked in the oven for about an hour.

WHAT IS IT?

Potjiekos is a dish of meat, poultry or seafood simmered with vegetables in a small pot with 3 legs (called potjiekos). The dish is prepared through sautéing onions, and red and green bell peppers. Spices are then tossed in. Next, tomato sauce is added, followed by an array of poultry, meat or seafood. Then, vegetables are added. The dish is often served with savory yellow rice.

Cape Town Fish Market is known for its seafood potjiekos. Fish spice made with garlic powder used in the dish. It features kingklip, hake, mussels, squid and king shrimp. The vegetables of choice are cooked baby potatoes and butternut squash. Fresh lemon is squeezed on the meat and vegetables and the dish is completed with fresh basil and parsley.

ANDREW ZIMMERN CAPE TOWN DISH – Tomato Bredie

WHAT IS IT?

Tomato bredie is a hearty stew of meat and potatoes, simmered in tomatoes. In South Africa, tomato bredie usually has lamb. The dish is prepared through dusting lamb knuckles with corn flour. The meat is then browned in onions and garlic before it is placed in a pot with some water and then braised for a few hours. Potatoes are added once the meat becomes soft. In another pot, the tomato sauce is prepared. Chopped tomatoes and onions, tomato paste, sugar, chili, salt, and pepper are simmered for about an hour. The tomato sauce is then mixed into the braised beef. Tomato bredie is typically served with rice.

WHAT IS IT?

Koeksisters are fried braided dough and soaked in flavored syrup. The batter is made of flour, baking powder, butter, eggs and water. Once the dough has cooled, it is rolled and cut into rectangles to be formed into braids before being fried. The fried braids are then bathed in cold syrup made of cream of tartar, hot water, sugar and lemon juice. They are drip-dried and cooled before being bagged.
