DISH – Rice Pot Sticker Soup, Oyster Omelet, Gua Bao, Sea Urchins, Steamed Tiny Helmet Shell Crabs, Sautéed King Crab, One-Bite Crab, and Ba-wan

WHAT IS IT?

Rice Pot Sticker Soup – liquid rice placed in a pot to steam and bake, with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, dried tiger lilies, dried shrimp, oysters and shredded pork; Oyster Omelet –fresh oysters ried in lard with potato starch then folded in eggs and topped with a savory sauce; Gua Bao – steamed bun filled with pork belly braised in soy sauce, wine, shallots and five-spice poweder, served with pickled mustard greens, cilantro and crushed peanuts; Sea Urchins – sea urchin roe; Steamed Tiny Helmet Shell Crabs – tiny helmet shell crabs steamed with garlic and Thai chili; Sautéed King Crab – king crab steamed and sautéed with shallots and garlic; One-Bite Crab – miniature hard-shell crabs fried whole and spiced; Ba-wan – Taiwanese meatball wrapped in steamed thick rice skin with bamboo, sliced pork and shiitake mushroom filling, topped with sweet garlic sauce and soy.

Keelung Night Market is about half an hour out of Taipei via commuter train. The Rice Pot Sticker Soup can be found in the area around the temple at Keelung Night Market.

DISH – Dou Jiang You Tiao, Iû-chiā-kóe, and Steamed Dumplings

WHAT IS IT?

Dou Jiang You Tiao – soup of hot soy milk with fried dough and scallions; Iû-chiā-kóe – fried dough in a hero; Steamed Dumplings – filled with a variety of meat, such as pork and shrimp.

Jin Chun Fa offers Beef Noodle Soup with clear broth infused with ginger. As an option, Tony also suggested Lo Mama Mi Xian Tang in the Da’an District that has been serving Pork Intestine Vermicelli Noodle Soup for more than 40 years.

WHAT IS IT?

Pan-fried little pockets of dough stuffed with minced beef or pork.

Although Tony did not visit Zhu Ji Xian Bing on this episode, he suggested it for its Taipei take on Xian Bing, a traditional northern China snack.  He described Xian Bing as Taiwanese version of a meat pie or empanada.

Stewed Bamboo Shoots – bamboo shoots stewed in soy and slightly dusted with sugar, served cold; Smoked Pig’s Ears – thin slices of smoked crisp pig’s ears, served with sesame oil; Stewed Pig’s Tail – pig’s tail stewed with black beans; Tsa Bi Whun – onions, scallions, pork and tuna sautéed with pumpkin, sugar and dried rice noodles; Omelet with Pickled Turnip – chopped semi-dried pickled turnip and garlic, mixed and pan-fried with egg.

WHAT IS IT?

Egg Noodles – fried egg noodles with pork and vegetables; Sea Snails – stir-fried sea snails; Fried Oysters – oysters fried in salt and white pepper; Fried Cod Fillet – crispy-fried cod fillet; San Bei Ji – also called “Three Cups Chicken”, it is chicken cooked in sesame oil, rice wine and soy sauce.

Fast Fry Bus is a fast-fry restaurant in a bus that is always on the move. It offers food that can be cooked up quick in a hot wok. Tony and friends also stopped by Cheun Cheng (Spring City Shrimp Fishing Restaurant), where one can fish for shrimp for dinner. As an option, Tony suggested Modern Toilet Restaurant, a toilet-themed restaurant in Wanhua District.

DISH – Soup Dumplings and Shrimp Siu Mai

WHAT IS IT?

Soup Dumplings – dumplings filled with meat and gelatinous stock; Shrimp Siu Mai – siu mai dumpling filled with shrimp and left open at the top.

Din Tai Fung is what Tony called “masters of the soup dumplings”, a “must-stop if you come to Taipei”. And although he did not stop by He Xiang Delicious, he suggested it for Bamboo Shoots Soup and Lotus Rice Parcel.
